Indigenous to Southern Sudan, Gum Africa (formerly Gum Arabic) has been used for centuries as an emulsifier and binding agent in soft drinks, confectioneries, pharmaceuticals, printing and furniture-making around the world.
As its first project from 2005 - 2008, CEDASS worked with the Government of Southern Sudan, a wholly-owned Southern Sudanese bank and community leaders to expand the local production of Gum Africa. The goal was that within a few years, it would become a self-sustaining, international trade export for Southern Sudan.
Due to the generosity of Canadians, the Gum Africa industry in Southern Sudan has made great strides to become a stable, economic export. Funds derived from the Gum Africa project were used for community projects, poverty initiatives, water, health and education in the region.
In 2008, the Gum Africa project was transferred successfully to the people of Southern Sudan to maintain, which has remained successful and continues to grow.
